(by Dick Taterfield, photo by Reg Snipe) An inspection last Thursday of the graveyard at the recently burned down Church of the Anointed Organ, Cack Lane, Brampton, gave light to the theft of a gravestone. The expensive and ornate memorial stone was only recently erected by Mrs. Constance Harping (52) for her deceased husband Toby Harping. The stone bears the words "Here Lies Toby Harping 1943 - 2001, Peace at Last". The police were called immediately and an unsuccessful house to house search was carried out with a number of suspects arrested for unrelated offences. P.C. Bernard Tiddle (32) explained to our reporter; "The full force of the law will be involved in this case, we will leave no stone unturned." The headstone, placed by local undertakers Messrs. Clutterbuck and Bracegirdle, was a new and experimental model, the full details of which are still unknown and shrouded in secrecy. Mr. Thelonius Bracegirdle (67) told us; "It represents a major scientific breakthrough in the field of monumental masonry, and could be very dangerous indeed in the wrong hands." The investigation continues. ![]() The misappropriated monument Police are also warning the general public about an increase in stolen funereal equipment on sale in car boot sales in the area. "A lot of it is likely to be sub-standard and may even be dangerous", Detective Inspector Daniel Collerham (58) told our reporter. "The engraving on stones is often badly erased and any soil embedded into brass handles is another dead give away. We are asking the public to keep their eyes peeled and inform us of anything suspicious immediately". ***** |
